Local SEO is one of the few marketing channels that pays you back forever. A page that ranks today will still be generating clicks next year, with no additional spend. The catch is that it does not run on autopilot. Google Business Profile signals decay, reviews go stale, and competitors keep adding the small things you forgot to do. The fix is a 30-minute quarterly audit, run by anyone on the team with a checklist.
The 14-point quarterly audit
- Business name, address, phone (NAP) consistent on your site and all citations
- Google Business Profile categories: primary correct, secondary relevant, no duplicates
- Business hours updated for holidays, seasons and any service changes
- Photos uploaded in the last 60 days: exterior, interior, team, recent work
- Google Posts published at least twice this month with real offers or updates
- Q&A section seeded with the 5 questions your customers actually ask
- Reviews: target 3 to 5 new reviews per month, response rate above 90 percent
- Service list complete with descriptions and prices where appropriate
- Attributes filled in (wheelchair access, women-owned, online estimates, etc.)
- Site title tags and meta descriptions on top 10 service pages
- On-page schema: LocalBusiness, Service, Review markup where relevant
- Page speed under 3 seconds on mobile for every landing page
- Top 3 service pages each have at least one case study, testimonial or example
- Citation audit: top 10 directories (Yell, Bing, Apple Maps, Facebook, etc.) consistent
Why a checklist beats a tool
Tools like BrightLocal, Whitespark and Semrush will run most of this for you if you can afford them. A spreadsheet with the 14 points above, owned by one person on the team, will produce 80 percent of the same result for the cost of a 30-minute meeting per quarter. The tool is a force multiplier. The discipline is the actual work.
The two signals that matter most
If you can only afford to do two things each quarter, do these. First, post 6 Google Business Profile updates in the next 90 days with real photos from real jobs. Second, reply to every review, positive and negative, within 24 hours. Review velocity and review response rate are the two signals that move the map pack ranking the most for a typical UK service business.
